DonateHelp Us Build the Sacred Heart Center for Peace![]() One of the best known stories of the Bible is the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and the fish (John 6:1-15). The story is a “capsule” of how God continually works throughout history. We all know that Jesus could have chosen to work the miracle without the five loaves and the two fish, but the point is that He chose not to. In this He followed the whole pattern of salvation history, namely working to people, through people. When God first spoke to Abraham, He could have spoken to the whole family or to the whole world, but chose not to. He spoke to Abraham, and through Abraham, to the family. And so, God continued to work and speak to people through Isaac, Jacob, the prophets, and finally through His Son, Jesus, always working to people, through people. In the Gospel we see Jesus continuing this same pattern. He calls together His apostles and sends them out into the world to continue the work He has begun. Just as Jesus chose to rely on the generosity of the little boy to work His miracle and feed the hungry crowd, so today He continues to rely on the generosity of the people of our time to continue His work. Jesus is more than willing to bless this work and even perform miracles in the process, but not without the generosity of our efforts. Like the little boy in the Gospel, let each of us discover the loaves and fish in our lives. Let us present them to the Lord and allow Him to bless them and work a miracle in forwarding His Kingdom. “The manner of giving shows the character of the giver, more than the gift itself.” John Lavater
